The Education bill has been passed out of the MN House.
It has always been a mystery why party line (Republican vs. Democrat) plays such an important role on education funding. A rural Representative of either party should be fighting for their district to ensure a child in Eagle Bend has the same education as the one in Edina. The fact that rural Representatives of either party voted for this bill is disappointing.
I believe Representative Otremba voted for this bill, and basically it gives lots of money to metro school and less money to schools that are not metro. The fight in St. Paul on issues like this should involve the Representatives of the out-metro schools banding together regardless of party to see fairness in education funding.
A break down of what school districts will get per pupil:
Minneapolis: 12,804
LP-GE: 8,750
Browerville: 8,171
Eagle Valley: 9,459
Bertha Hewitt: 9,090
Alexandria: 8,403
There were several amendments offered to equalize the funding between metro and rural, but those failed on a largely partisan basis.
